Owen draws on bed sheets

It is finally here…the time when Owen will be old enough to start causing trouble. :) He drew on our master bedroom’s bed sheets today and it only took a few seconds!

I was looking at something on the computer and the next moment when I turned around, he had already “decorated” the sheets.  My initially response was of course a loud “Owen, no no!” Then remembered all the articles I had read about not saying no, but rather explaining what he/she can do.  So I calmed down and tried to explain to him that you can only draw on paper.  I don’t know if he understands…we’ll see.  Sherwood asked him why I had given him a pen and I said I gave him a pencil, but somehow he got a hold of a pen and that was what he ended up using. Luckily, we were still able to wash the ink off.

The incident doesn’t end here though.  When Sherwood came home from school yesterday, he noticed the marks and asked Owen who drew on the sheets.  To my surprise, Owen lied and said “Mommy.” Now that was not acceptable.  We firmly told him that if he did it, he should say he did it, and not lie about it.  It’s unbelievably hard to explain to a 2.5 year old the concept of lying.  We did the best we could…he seems to understand as he later said “Owen” when posed the same question.

I personally expect many more of these incidents to happen, so I  need to read up on what to do when they do and how to teach him the virtue of honesty.

Owen’s first day at day care

Warning: copy() [function.copy]: Filename cannot be empty in /home/xhyao/public_html/baby/wp-content/plugins/mytube/mytube.php on line 220

*Sigh* Yesterday was the worst day for Owen to start day care, but I had no choice as his caretaker - my aunt-in-law - was leaving for TW today.

Two main reasons:
1) We actually had a snow storm (by NC definition - a few inches) on Tuesday and since it has lingered in the 20’s, the road conditions were not great yesterday morning.

2) The day care had a flooding over the weekend, and thus had to moved to a temporary site, so Owen would be at a new environment (what I was trying to avoid by having him sit in the class for a few days) and I would not be able to see him during his first few days via webcam.

As we braved the road conditions, I hit black ice along the way and had a spinout.  Was initially on the left lane of a 3-lane road and ended up facing the opposite direction on the right lane.  Thanks to God there was no cars behind us (know God was protecting us because that’s a busy road) so we managed to manuever back to the left lane but I was clearly shakened.  Didn’t think Owen was affected until this morning, on our way to day care, he kept on repeating, “Mommy, no spinning, no spinning.”  Poor little guy.

In any case, Owen did not cry when I left him with the teachers (he was too caught up in observing his new surrounding).  According to the daily report, the teacher wrote “Owen had a great day all things considered.  He has cried off and on today.  When we transition to something new that he’s not familiar with, he gets a little upset.  Tomorrow will be a much better day now that he’s getting the routine down. Great job, Owen!” He ate most of lunch (Turkey & cheese sandwich on wheat) and all of his snack (wafers & cookies) so he did do pretty well for his first day! :)

Owen to start day care next week

Great news! God is - as always faithful - He answered my seemingly impossible prayer and created a space for Owen at the day care center!

I called the center again this morning to see what position we are at and the answer was once again, disappointing - 3rd (registered back in Sept or so). However, this time, the person provided another glimpse of hope when she suggested that I try the other branches. I did not realize that I could simultaneously be on the waiting list for all of the branches in the area (no one told me). Even though I was not hopeful and assumed the waiting list would be as long as the one we’ve been on, at this point, I am willing to try anything so I asked her if she could help me get on the waiting list for the two other locations (one in Cary, another in Durham) and she said sure, that all she had to do was forward my application to the two locations.

Not long after, I received a call at work from the Durham location informing of the great news - they had just opened up a new class for the 2 year olds and can offer us a spot right away! I was ecstatic and am so thankful to God that He - once again - heard my urgent plea and created a miracle. Even better is the fact that currently, the class is not full (only 12 rather than the max of 16) so Owen can receive extra attention (there is a huge difference between 1:6 vs 1:8), at least initially. Here are some pics of the school:http://www.kidsrkidsrtp.com/photoGallery.php. It also has secure web cam so I can “see” Owen” whenever I want. :)

Another note: Owen is having some major jet lag…he woke up at 5am this morning, went back to sleep at around 7am, did not wake up til noon. Then after lunch, at 3pm, aunt-in-law suggested they go upstairs to play and Owen replied, “No, so tired, go upstairs to sleep.” :) He did not get up until 7pm. That’s why I wanted to give him a few days before he starts school.
