Owen’s first laughs

Owen has reached another milestone - he laughed on his 97th day!!!

I was laying with him on the bed today and wanted to help him practice rolling over so I laid him on his side and baby Owen took the hint and started to roll over.  In one quick swoop, he was in a very awkward twisted position - his lower body (waist and down) had rolled over but his upper body was only 3/4th way there.  He could not make the complete turn but was trying extremely hard, turning his little face red.  Seeing his little squished face (left eye and cheek as he tried to roll over to his left), I felt bad for him but also found it amusing.

I figured I would help him along, so I gave him a little nudge and he let out a chain of ”ga-ga-ga-ga”.  I quickly flipped him over to see if he was hurt (I could not see his face) cause his whole face was red so I thought he had yelped in pain, but when we continued with our exercise, he did it again “ga-ga-ga”.  This time, I saw his huge grin and realized that he was laughing!!!  I tried it again and sure enough, whenever I nudged him and helped him roll over, he would laugh.  It was the cutest thing in the world!! I was so proud of him - my little baby can laugh now!

I don’t know if Daddy has seen him laugh, but it was the first time Mommy has heard him REALLY laugh (not the “ha” type of laugh). I wished I had taped the monumental moment but unfortunately, I was the only one home at the time, but I am sure there will be lot more chances in the future. :)

Social Butterfly

I’m such a little social butterfly - since I’m a 3-month old, I coo and smile spontaneously, even at people I don’t know (yes, I do recognize my family now)! Of course I reserve my “head-back” chuckles and laughters and lobsided grins only for my Mommy and Daddy (because I know besides God, they love me the most), and maybe grandma and grandpa, but if you’re lucky, I just may flash you a smile!

Most of the time, I am a very happy camper, but I am certainly not afraid of showing my emotions and making it clear when I’m interested and excited or bored and ready for a new activity. Although I like having quiet times every now and then, I love to talk and play with you!

baby’s first year medical expense - how much is enough?

It is that time of a year again - choose your health insurance plan and set aside money for flexible spending account. Two insurance choices, ~$1.6K with $700/p deductible or $3K without deductible. I chose the first one since I don’t envision Owen will spend ~$1.4K in his first year… As far as the Flexible Spending Account, I set $1K. For the people who have kids, please weigh in with your opinion. thanks.

First haircut

Snip, snip…baby Owen got his first hair cut this past Sunday from Grandfather Hong! As with the rest of his body, Owen’s hair is also on turbo growth…it has only been 84 days and already, his hair is covering a big portion of his forehead and ears - he was becoming “shaggy Owen”! Daddy wanted to give Owen the haircut, but Mommy insisted that Granddaddy is given the honor since she still wanted to be able to bring baby out every now and then.  :)

Granddaddy draped a cape around baby Owen’s little neck while Mommy held him over her shoulder.  Grandmommy initially was videocaming this monumental moment, but got too nervous when Granddaddy started cutting around Owen’s ears and Owen was bouncing up and down and all around - she was worried that her grandson was going end up with a portion of his ears missing, so she put aside the videocam to stare intently.

We all finally decided that it was too risky, and that it would be best to trim the area around the ears when he is asleep.   Granddaddy then trimmed the hair around the forehead area…now all can see baby Owen’s forehead and more of his cute little face! We picked up Owen’s hair and wrapped it up for Grandparents Yao to take back to China to make a calligraphy pen out of it for memoirs!
