week2 in review

Yesterday, Owen celebrated his two week birthday. let’s review what really has happened in the past week.

  • Owen gained weight from 6lb 13oz to 7lb 11oz, which translates 2 oz per day, this is the growth of a super baby (normal baby gains about 1 oz a day)!!
  • Owen get 1 inch longer since birth, the trend puts Owen at 21.75 inch by the end of  first month, which is 59% of all baby length percentile.
  • he can laugh so loud that we can hear it (except he only laughs when he is in sleep)
  • increased the diaper change speed from 6 wet diaper + 3 dirty diaper to 20 wet diaper + 5 dirty diaper, we have to order diapers in the volume of hundreds now to prevent an outage.
  • parents (me and Jane) learned to make weird sound and funny faces to please Owen
  • I self learnd and self certified as the master of fine finger-nail clipping
  • since two weeks ago, the mother has lost 21 pounds, and the father has lost 3 pounds.

As usual, Owen graciously offered his benedictions to our readers, notice copyright is protected.

Owen’s first personality test results

After we have raised Owen for a week, we have known Owen quite well based on his responses to the new world. We just did a personality test with this behavior based tool , we for sure like Owen’s personality so far!!! Keep growing Owen!

What can you expect for your baby? He will be a very passionate person. He is fiercely competitive, motivated, and driven. He is very bright but is easily bored or distracted. You won’t have to worry about him being a couch potato. He will be very athletic or physically active. He is emotional, sensitive, and affectionate. His image and good looks are very important to him. When he gets to be a teen he will be the one that refuses to wear anything that is not in style. He will burn a whole in your pocket if you let him. He will drive you crazy wanting the newest athletic shoes. He enjoys listening to music, dancing, and loves a good drama (whether its fiction or real life).

He will be very ambitious and will do well in life. He adapts well to change and can function well in just about any setting. He is good at rolling with the punches and nothing gets him down. Career chooses may include actor/model, doctor, lawyer, advertising executive, or politician.

The longest day and night

4:00am Jane woke up during the night, and she excitedly woke me off from my sweet dream, and yelled at me.. “Gong, I think it is the time!” the proof seems concrete enough that I have to believe it.. we saw discharge of blood mixed with mucous! The pain seems intensified and become cyclic. Oh, my! Owen is coming!

6:00am Jane took a shower, called her parents in VA and they sound too excited to wait let the fun continuing without their personal seeing it, they will drive in the morning so that we can meet at the hospital!

8:00am Finishing up the checklist for the packages to bring to the hospitial, breakfast is ready.

12:00pm Jane made very slow progress, the pain intensifies but pain interval still remains at 10 min range, meaning we are still in the first stage, seems we will take lunch at home, good for all us. After lunch, we decided to take a walk by going to a shopping center, hoping the walk can make the cervix opens faster.

2:00pm  Seems the walking has made the trick. We timed the pain cycle to be around 5 min range, called doctor, and he suggested we directly go to the hospitial.

4:00pm  We arrived at the hospital, waiting for the nurse to check on us to see whether we have made enough progress to be admitted. (many people say hospital will send us home if cervix is still under 3 cm)

5:00pm  Nurse measured the cervix size, we are at 3.5 cm, just enough to be admitted by the hospital. Parents  brought in all the bags and luggages for the night. Wholy cow, the entire crew is in the delivery room.

5:25pm - 9:25pm too painful to record

9:30pm Dr. Buckley started the final stage of the delivery - i.e. help the mother make the final push and get the baby out.
9:55pm I can see Owen’s head

10:03pm Owen is out - we heard the baby is crying

Today: Beginning of Maternity Leave

Today’s the beginning of my 9-week maternity leave…went to the doctor’s today and the doctor put me out of work due to my massive edema.  He took one look at my feet/legs and asked, “How do you walk on those feet?!”  Honestly, for those who have been spared the horror of seeing my scary feet, I can only describe my current feet realistically as “human elephant feet” (with the folds at the ankles and everything).   If I don’t put them up for a good few hours, they swell and itch and tingle…:(

In addition to the edema in my feet, the swelling in my fingers is also making it uncomfortable to type so I am REALLY grateful that my doctor put me out of work.  Just this week, other symptoms such as mild headaches and chest spasms have also surfaced…doctor thinks that it’s due to the heat and the fact that I am “very” pregnant.

My manager is concerned because she sees all the symptoms on me that she has when she has preeclampsia so I asked the doctor if I will develop it…he said that he doesn’t think so since my blood pressure has been good during the whole pregnancy but commented that we should keep a close eye on it.

He also revealed that my cervix is still pretty much closed so it may still be a little while before I go into labor, so maybe baby Owen will make his grand entrance into the world as anticipated: on or around August 10th! Daddy’s getting kind of impatient though and asks baby Owen everyday if he is going to come out today…I scold him for being a “pushy” Asian parent and tell him that Owen will come out at his own time when he is ready.
